In preparation for SDJT's world premiere production of Edgar Allan Poe's Gruesome Gallery of Grotesquerie, join director Blake McCarty for this unique series of devising workshops. Inspired by the macabre poetry and prose of Edgar Allan Poe, teen artists will have the opportunity to explore playwriting, improvisation, puppetry, songwriting, and design while creating material that will be used in the mainstage production later in the season. Students have no obligation to audition or participate in the show but will play a vital role in its development while expanding their skills and artistry.

 

Aide in Training

Hybrid- In person and Zoom 

This class is the first step in a training series for potential hire as a teaching aide at Junior Theatre. A mandatory prerequisite for students under 18, this class will cover policies, procedures, inclusion and safety training, as well as positive and supportive approaches for working with children. Attendance is mandatory and no conflicts will be accepted. Test on the final day is a requirement. Students must be 14 years or older to participate.

Rhythm and Rhyme

This combination movement and music class will encourage young students’ creativity while exploring topics including tempo, beat, shape, level and feeling. Young artists will gain confidence in their bodies, begin to develop their ear and learn basic musicianship in this exciting, upbeat class!

Unscripted Scenes

Learn to “think on your feet” with the art of improv! This fast-paced class is a fun introduction to theatre, or a great way to build on prior experience. This class promises lots of laughs, while giving actors the chance to learn or enhance improvisation skills in a supportive environment.

Homeschool Jr.: Create-a-Play

Grades: 2-4

Use your imagination to bring an original play to life! Guided by the Teaching Artist, students will create and perform in several plays over the course of the session, and present their favorite to a live audience on the last day of class.

Grades: 7-12

Want to learn how to stand out in an audition room or onstage? Get into the nuts and bolts of acting by learning how to analyze a scene for beats and insight into your character. Students will become “smart actors” through scene work while deepening their knowledge of blocking notation and theatrical terminology. This class is excellent preparation for students interested in auditioning for stage plays, and we welcome all levels of experience.

Be the author of your own story in this class, designed for young actors with a penchant for playwriting. Collaborate with your Teaching Artist and classmates to invent original characters and stories, then bring your creations to life for friends and family on the last day of class!
